Product information

The Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol D2 is an advanced modular DJ controller tailored for those seeking a versatile, screen-based interface without compromising their existing setup. Ideal for DJs who already have a preferred mixer, the D2 delivers comprehensive deck and transport control in a sleek and portable format.

Design and Build: Constructed with durability in mind, the Kontrol D2 matches the height and depth of the renowned Traktor Kontrol S8, integrating seamlessly into any setup. Its lightweight, primarily plastic design is supported by four adjustable feet, ensuring it aligns perfectly with standard mixers. The material resists fingerprints, maintaining a clean aesthetic even after extensive use.

Features and Functionality: The D2 provides an innovative interface for DJs who need advanced screen capabilities and effects routing. The top right section includes four deck-select buttons (A, B, C, D) for intuitive deck switching and effects routing, enabling control of all four decks if needed. However, it’s designed primarily for controlling a single or paired deck (e.g., A/C or B/D) for optimized workflow. While the D2 can technically manage all four decks, doing so may feel cumbersome, making it better suited for dedicated deck control.

Enhanced Performance Controls: Equipped with high-resolution screens, the D2 displays essential waveform data and track details, reducing reliance on a laptop during performances. Recent Traktor software updates have improved visual elements, such as indicating previously played tracks and highlighting items in the Preparation list, though there are still minor alignment issues with the playhead.

Connection and Power: Each D2 includes a two-port USB hub, which facilitates chaining multiple units. While the controller requires external power, it features a unique splitter cable for dual setups. This arrangement simplifies connections but requires managing an additional cable.

Practical Use: The D2 shines in various setups, from working alongside the Traktor Kontrol Z1 to augmenting turntable systems. It delivers substantial control for effects, remix deck management, and transport functions but lacks a jog wheel, which may be a drawback for scratch-focused DJs. The layout and usability enhance track positioning and control, with the screen positioning streamlining visual cueing near vinyl interfaces.

Ideal Configurations: Popular setups include pairing two D2s with a Z1 or positioning them alongside a traditional mixer for more expansive control. While the D2's remix deck integration is competent, it’s still not as fluid as the dedicated F1 controller, emphasizing its best use in transport and effects control.
